The affluent planter from nearby Edesto Island had passed away on May 2nd, 1849, and due to he and his family's prominence and success, wealthy plantation owners from all over came to Hilton Head to mourn his passing.

The funeral procession began at Braddock's Point Plantation, where Bainard had passed.
