Well, let's dive into it.

Today, we're going to tackle one of the more controversial episodes of the Guadalcanal campaign. And we're going to tackle, without a doubt, is the worst, this is what's considered the worst defeat in United States Navy history.

That, of course, is the Battle of Savo Island, August 8th, 9th, 1942.

Now, the battle itself unfolded and was executed in a relatively short amount of time,

less than two hours total really from start to finish. But in those terrible hours, the entire

pre-war U.S. Navy surface battle force doctrine was utterly destroyed by nighttime Japanese naval

gunfire and incredibly destructive Japanese long lance torpedoes.

Pre-war tactics, the aforementioned doctrine and arrogance on the part of the U.S. Navy was since sinking to the bottom of the waters that, what would soon be called, iron bottom, sound, along with the lives of over 1,000 American sailors
