Summary

The Battle of Cable Street on 4 October 1936 has been described as “the greatest anti-fascist victory on British soil”. It is certainly the most mythologised, most recently inspiring massive anti-fascist protests in British cities. But what actually happened that day? Who exactly was doing the battling? And did this display of working-class solidarity in London’s East End really stop Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists in its tracks?  Dorian tells Ian the story of that landmark Sunday and its aftermath, from the points of view of protesters, police and politicians, and finds some surprising answers.  Get exclusive extras like supporter-only Q&A editions (first one coming next week) when you back Origin Story on Patreon.   Written and presented by Ian Dunt and Dorian Lynskey. In light of the recent far-right riots in British cities, we decided to tell the story of the

Battle of Cable Street on the 4th of October, 1936, perhaps the most fabled episode in the history

0:33.5

of British anti-fascism, unless you count the entire Second World War, which was also

0:40.3

a strong anti-fascist effort. Ian, what does Cable Street evoke for you? I think just the standard.

0:48.4

It was definitely part of the narrative growing up in sort of lefty circles, you know, this great

0:52.7

sort of moment, left-wing pride.

0:54.6

I remember almost stumbling across the mural one day without looking for it.

0:59.0

Things always seem to mean so much more when you stumble across them without meaning to see them.

1:03.6

And I was quite struck by it.

1:04.6

I think it was actually, it's very, very beautiful.

1:07.4

I presume, but I think I might be wrong, that there's a bit of myth making involved there

1:13.5

and it wasn't quite as pronounced and pure as I've been told, but I think you're about to

1:18.3

tell me, really?

1:18.9

Yeah, no, slightly disappointing research.

1:21.4

No.

1:22.4

So the myth, I mean, it's not that it's untrue, like myths aren't necessarily false, but

1:27.2

they are kind of versions of what happened.

1:31.2

So in that version, a working class alliance of anti-fascists clashed with Oswald Mosley's British Union of fascists,

1:36.9

routing them as a national force and proving that grassroots resistance to fascism is more effective than state action.
