But the message I want to preach this morning is how to understand adversity. So what is

adversity? The word to be adverse means to be against. So have you ever had anything or someone

or events come against you? And you can't figure out why. And then you begin to examine your heart,

and you think it might be some sin that God is punishing you for.

But that's the first thing we do is we blame ourselves

and we look for culpability or guilt.

But you know what?

The Bible says in Psalm 34,

many are the afflictions of the righteous.

Wow. I never understood that concept, but there is something that you could only learn when you suffer.

Now, if I would ask you for volunteers for suffering, nobody's going to raise their

hand. I certainly wouldn't, right? But, you know, suffering will come at some point in your life

where something will not go the way you want it to go, and you really need to depend on the Lord.

And it's a time of a fiery trial.

Do you know when John the Baptist was introducing Jesus, who was to come,

he said that he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

So what is this baptism of fire?

Well, baptism in water is when the pastor puts you into the water,

as symbolically you die to your old life, and then it raises you up to a new life. That's water baptism.
