At dawn on September 14th, 1814, noted slaveholder and anti-abolitionist Francis Scott Key woke up on a boat in the Baltimore Harbor.

He looked out at Fort McHenry, which was going on 25 hours of straight bombardment at that

point, and through all the smoke and destruction Key could see a flag. As the story goes, he broke see a flag.

things after him, including the steel-arched Francis Scott Key Bridge, which was
