Summary

In the fall of 1829, a Scottish settlement was thrown into turmoil by an invisible tormentor whose nightly mischief escalated into arson. Despite constant watch and attempted exorcisms, flames erupted repeatedly in one targeted home until its terrified occupants fled, only to see it burn to the ground. Seeking refuge in a neighboring house, they were again assailed by eerie noises, flickering blue candle flames, strange embers, and the sulfuric scent of brimstone. More disturbingly, unseen forces pelted them with lead balls and slugs—harmless but relentless. Unable to endure the torment any longer, the villagers summoned a witch doctor in hopes of banishing the fiend once and for all. This week, we are joined by local expert Dr. Rick Fehr for a deep dive into the origins of this legend.

One house in particular appeared to be the single object of the vengeance of the ghost, who set it on fire in several places,

notwithstanding the strictest watch was kept, and all the exorcisms

At length the house was abandoned by the inmates, and in the morning following was burnt to the ground.

In the neighboring house, to which the people had retired, they were again persecuted by the industrious demon,

and were assailed with noises more dreadfully superhuman and discordant than the catterwalling of a dozen couples of cats in a dark garret.

Having retired into a room with the

What is still more extraordinary, the persons in the room were assailed with balls and slugs of lead,

The devil, however, had some conscience left, for though he had committed arson,
