On Friday, July 20, 2012, the Century 16 movie complex in Aurora, Colorado was packed.

Almost 400 ticket holders had taken their seats inside Theatre Number 9 and were anxiously awaiting the special Midnight debut of the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

Among those people was a tall, lanky young man in his early 20s sitting alone in the front row.

He was wearing a black t-shirt, baggy cargo pants, and a dark knit cap pulled over his brightly dyed orange red hair.

But he blended in with others in the crowd who wore costumes from the iconic characters in the film.

During the film's previews, the young man suddenly stood up and pretended to take a call on his cell phone.

He told the non-existent caller on the other end to hold on while he made his way toward the emergency exit door at the front of the theatre.

If anyone noticed him leaving, they probably quickly forgot about it. The audience was focused on the movie that was about to begin.

As he stepped outside, the young man placed a piece of plastic in the door jam to keep it open.

He then went to his parked car just a few feet away. He retrieved tactical gear from the back seat and began putting it on.

A bulletproof vest, bulletproof arm protection, and chaps as well as neck and groin Kevlar protectors.

A gas mask, goggles, helmet, and a headset.

He then gathered an assault rifle, a Remington 12-gauge shotgun, one of his two 40 caliber, blockhand guns, and 6,000 rounds of ammunition.

At 12.30am, he reappeared through the door he had left propped open, dressed in head-to-toe armor.

He calmly walked in and stood silently facing the audience, backlit by the huge silver screen behind him.

The headset he sported was blasting loud techno music in his ears, creating the soundtrack for the chaos and suffering he was about to unleash.

He was ready to execute his plan, and then James Holmes began to shoot.

In that moment, he became his own version of the Dark Knight, but instead of the hero, he was the villain, taking vengeance on everyone around him.
