Summary

In September 1971 prisoners in a high security jail in the USA turned on their guards taking 42 people hostage. After 4 days of negotiations, armed police retook the jail. By the time the siege ended 39 people were dead. Rebecca Kesby spoke to Carlos Roache, a former prisoner who took part in the uprising.

prison suddenly erupted into a full-on riot. Carlos Roach was serving 35 years for robbery and was in the bathroom

when he first became aware of the uprising. I was in the shower, I took a shower

and I came out the shower and a guy was driving down the hallway or a forklift.

Yeah and this was unheard of. He drove the forklift into the gate. He put the forks underneath the gate and he picked it up and it was on. They were shooting gas at him and guys was picking up the gas and throwing it back at the police. It was on.
