Kesby and it's 50 years since the Attica Prison Rebellion in New York State.

A group of inmates took over the jail and held a number of prison guards hostage

demanding better conditions.

Sparked by bullying and racism, it ended in a bloody crackdown.

In 2016, I spoke to Carlos Roach, who was there,

and remembers the events in harrowing detail.

On September the 9th, 1971, around breakfast time, a small-scale dispute within Attica Maximum Security

prison suddenly erupted into a full-on riot. Carlos Roach was serving 35 years for robbery and was in the bathroom

when he first became aware of the uprising. I was in the shower, I took a shower

and I came out the shower and a guy was driving down the hallway or a forklift.

A prisoner?

Yeah and this was unheard of. He drove the forklift into the gate. He put the forks underneath the gate and he picked it up and it was on. They were shooting gas at him and guys was picking up the gas and throwing it back at the police. It was on.
