Today we're going back to one of the key moments in Spain's transition to democracy,

the murder of five lawyers in January 1977.

I've been speaking to the last survivor of what became known as the massacre

of a tocha.

It's the 24th of January 1977. On a cold night the buzzer rings at a lawyer's office at

number 55 at Tocher Street in Central Madrid.

We had a meeting and I was chatting because we were still waiting for some people to arrive.

The buzzer went.

My friend went out to open the door and got a gun pointed at him.

This is Spanish lawyer Alejandro Ruiz Huerta Carbone.

I turned round and then two people appeared,

one of them showing his face and the other wearing an

anarach with his face covered. They were pointing two big guns at us. They put us in a

semi-circle and forced us to put our hands up.

Get those hands right up, they said.

In January 1977, Franco, the fascist dictator, had been dead for just over a year.
