Between 9 and 10 o'clock in the morning, Jesse James, the notorious outlaw, was shot and killed at number 1318 Lafayette

Street, St. Joseph, by Robert Ford, otherwise called Robert Johnson. Jesse James and the company

of his wife and two children, and and Charlie Ford came to St. Joseph on

the 9th of November, 1881, and rented a house at the corner of Lafayette in 21st Street.

They resided there about two months and then moved to a cottage near the corner of 13th in Lafayette streets

where they have resided ever since.

On Sunday, March 19th, Jesse and Charlie were joined by Robert Ford,

Charlie's brother, who has remained with him at the house ever since,

accompanying Jesse on several occasions

downtown to buy newspapers. The Ford boys were in the outlaw's confidence, and was understood

that they were to go with him on all of his expeditions. It was their intention, however,

to kill him whenever an opportunity was presented.

It had been arranged that the three were to start last night for Platt City.

There was a murder trial in progress there, and it was contemplated that while this was going on

and all the people were interested therein, they

would pounce upon a bank and effect a robbery.

Yesterday morning, Robert assisted Mrs. James in the kitchen, while Charlie and Jesse

went to the stable and fed and curried the horses.

Returning to the house, all three washed their hands and entered the front room,

leaving Mrs. James in the kitchen.
