Summary

The half century between 1870 and 1920 was one of conflict between British colonialism and the people of the Middle East and North Africa. In this episode, James is joined by archeologist and author Neil Faulkner to examine the clashes of armies, ideologies and forms of oppression, clashes which would prove fatal. Neil explains this revolutionary history, exploring British imperialism in northeast Africa which has repercussions rippling into the 21st century. Can this war be considered the first modern Jihad?

And it's what you call the first modern jihad. So let's address that word

jihad because most of us might associate it with the war on terror. I've been talking a

lot about Al-Qaeda, a lot about the Taliban recently and

what about ISIS of course as well and jihad's a term that gets kind of entangled with this

form of extreme Islamic terrorism. But is it best to find as a struggle or a holy war? And if so, when we're

talking about the Anglo Arab Wars, who is this jihad against? The idea goes back a very, very long way.
