I've told you all a few stories set during the time period we call the American Wild West.

This time period which was situated between the American Civil War and the early 1900s

was kind of crazy. There were cowboys and bandits, wild west shows, and a great big rush to get

out to the western portions of our nation. During this time there were also great advances in

industry and invention. And as we will learn in this episode, entertainment.

It was during this time period that inventors like Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell

were coming up with their amazing inventions, many of which we still use today.

And many of those inventions not only helped to industrialize the work of the country,

but they also helped to bring changes in the entertainment industry as well.

While the man I'm going to tell you about in this episode also lived during that time.

He wasn't an inventor, but he did leave a big mark in history.

Will Rogers was born on November 4, 1879 to his parents, Clement Van Rogers, and Mary America

Scrimcher Rogers. In the part of our country that would become the state of Oklahoma. His mom had a

really big name, didn't she? Well Will was a proud member of the Cherokee Nation. His dad was a

Cherokee judge and helped write the Constitution for the new state of Oklahoma and his mom,

who was a descendant of a Cherokee chief, was known for her ladylike etiquette and education
