Charmaine has worked as a journalist in Australia, Japan, and Hong Kong.

She became the South China Morning Post's design editor in 2005,

having been its literary, deputy features, and behind the news editor.

Charmaine is the author of Courtyard Living, Contemporary Houses of the Asia Pacific.

At the time of the Tokyo Subway Seren attack in 1995,

Charmaine was working at the Asahi Evening News,

the English language arm of Japan's Asahi Shin Bun newspaper.

She has an MA in Japanese studies from So-As University of London.
