talking with Mark Stein, history professor at San Francisco State and the author

and editor of four books and a three volume encyclopedia on LGBT history, including the Stonewall

riots, a documentary history. Let's hear what he has to say about this historic uprising.

So I was wondering if we could get started by having you talk about the 1950s and the 1960s as an era.

So the 50s and 60s were an extremely repressive time in American history for the LGBT

community. L LGBTQ community. Can you give us a quick overview of what life was like

for them prior to the Stonewall Uprising?

Sure, sure.

Well, it's not as though things were great
