on Friday afternoon, which I don't think anybody would call inspiring, but at least

did acknowledge the situation, which he had been previously attempting to downplay by sending

signals to the press that it was essentially time to move on from the Afghan news cycle,

doing this build back better agenda meeting with democratic leaders and holding a news conference,

not even a news conference. I guess a speech on COVID and updated boosters when the story of the

week was quite clearly Afghanistan. The president gave an address. I talked about some of the concerns

that were put forward to him from the press and then similarly walked off after taking four

questions. One of the things that he stressed was that, listen, you get yourself to the airport.

We want to get everybody to the airport. If you can get yourself to the airport, get yourself to

the airport, acknowledging, however, that it was difficult that this Taliban had set up checkpoints

everywhere and that they weren't making it easy to get to the airport. But nevertheless,
