He grew up in a simple family and did not start out as a famous explorer.

As a young man, he worked in a shop for a time, but he soon became interested in the sea.

He joined merchant ships and learned

how to sail, navigate, and read maps. Cook was known for being careful, hardworking,

and very good at understanding directions and distances. Over time, Cook joined the British Navy,

where he became known for his strong skills in navigation
