Tonight we'll be reading a story called

The Adventures of a Spanish None from the strange storybook by Mrs Andrew Lang published in 1913.

This story tells of a young woman who had been raised in a convent, but had dreams of exploring the world.

She then acts upon them, dressed as men, and is full of exploits and daring. Let's get cozy. Close your eyes.

If you had visited the convent of Saint Sebastian in the Spanish town of the same name at the end of the

16th century you would have found there a merry, naughty, clever little girl called Catalina de Arrouso, the torment and delight of all the nuns.

Catalina had been sent to the convent

when she was quite a baby,

because her father, like many other gentlemen in the Spain of those days,

was too poor to provide for his daughters as well as his sons. And in general the girls

were happy enough in the life into which they had been thrust without any will of their own, and were allowed a certain amount

of pleasure and could see their relations from time to time.
