To most people, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is the organization that puts on the Oscars.

And the president of the Academy is some old guy who holds up the show with a boring speech.

Well, the Academy does a whole lot more than put on an award ceremony.

It's a 6,000-member 10 million dollar institution.

They do film research and preservation, make over a million

dollars in grants, and hold amazing exhibits and screenings. A lot of them are open to the public.

And it can no longer be said that the president of this august body is stodgy. The week before last,

white smoke wafted from the academy's boardroom and news spread throughout the land that Tom

Sherrick had been anointed president.

He's a former chairman of 20th century Fox Domestic Film Group and a partner in Revolution Studios.

His dinner of Champions for MS research is one of Hollywood's most high-profile fundraisers,

and he's one guy in the business who actually speaks his mind.
