If someone told you that they left the Church due to the abuse crisis, what would you say?

Brian from Jacksonville found himself in this situation and asked Patrick how he should have responded.

Patrick reads some words from his book Why Be Catholic. He explains that if you really believe that Jesus founded this Church, there should be no reason to leave. We need to be Catholic for Jesus, not for anyone else.

great response to that that is charitable, but also effective in maybe bringing them a back or just

0:49.0

explaining what happened. I don't know. I just, I've had a loss for words. No, I can understand

why. And I share your concern because obviously, you know, if you want to

help somebody, it's important to be able to say something that would be meaningful to them.

1:03.3

Sometimes it's hard in the moment to know what to do. Let me share with you how I put it.

1:08.6

I put it in the first part of my book called YB Catholic, and I actually start with the

1:13.5

abuse crisis.

1:14.7

So let me just share with you a little bit from that book what I say.

1:18.5

I say, the Catholic Church is a lot like Noah's Ark, immense and capacious.

1:22.8

It is also ungainly and lumbering, not built for speed, but for endurance.

1:27.4

It causes everyone to stop and

1:29.1

stare. Some scoff thinking it bizarre or comical. Others find themselves drawn to it, longing to get
