Summary

It’s July 1st. This day in 1992, two abortion rights activist traveled to the United States carrying abortion pills, in order to get arrested and spark a legal case around the legality of the pill.

Jody, NIki, and Kellie are joined by podcast host TJ Raphael to discuss what happened after the two people were arrested, and the new podcast series that looks at the fight over the abortion pill that exploded in the early 1990s.

This stage, Live First 1992, a 29-year-old woman from the Bay Area flew from London to New York,

accompanied by a 72-year-old abortion rights activist.

And when they landed in New York, they promptly had their bags searched and they were arrested.

In their possession were several abortion pills, which are legal in Europe but were illegal

at the time in the United States.

And these two had actually alerted customs to the fact that they were carrying these pills

and they were intending to be arrested, intending for this case to then go up the courts and spark

illegal and larger battle over the abortion pill.
