The Abbey of St. Victor in Paris started around 1108. So on this episode of five minutes in church history, we'll be visiting the 12th century.

It was started as an Augustinian order and a number of very

famous medieval people made their way through the Abbey. Thomas Beckett

studied there. Of course he was murdered in the Canterbury Cathedral, so that's a fascinating story.

Peter Lombard spent some time there.

He would come to be the author of the Four Books of Sentences. This would come to be a standard medieval textbook on theology.

It would be the book that Martin Luther had to study and master and Peter Lombard spent some time at the Abbey we also have three

key figures who have a long association with the Abbey and we'll spend a little

time with each one. They're all from the 1100s. We have Hugh of St. Victor, Richard of

St. Victor, and Adam of St. Victor. Hugh was born around 1096 in Saxony.

He made his way to Paris to the Abbey of St. Victor.

He died there in 1141.

From 1120 through 1140. He was master of the school at St. Victor. He gets credit for

books he likely didn't write and they were probably written by others in the Abbey and were anonymous and later they got attributed to him

But one book that we know that he did write was his book on the sacraments

And he starts off talking about why we need them.

And his first line is,

Man's first sin was pride.

And from that first sin come three consequences,

So far, Hugh of St. Victor is rather Augustinian in his outlook.
