Summary
Trail Runner Nation's Southern California corespondent, Jimmy Dean Freeman, joins the Nation to discuss new year's resolutions and goal setting.
Stuff we referenced:
- Vanessa Rodriguez wrote for Active.com, "7 Ultrarunning Myths That Hold you Back".
- "Mind the Gap" from Jimmy's blog.
- Ted Video: Derek Sivers: "Keep your goals to yourself"
- Never too old to start: Fauja Singh, the guy who ran his first marathon at age 89!
- Helen Klein, now 91, started running at age 55. She is the oldest woman to run a sub 24-hour 100-mile race. She finished the Grand Slam at age 66.
Here are SOME steps we came up with to achieving your running goals:
- Set the goal - don't worry about the myths that hold you back or what other people say
- Identify the obstacles that might get in your way - plan how you will overcome them
- Break the goal into smaller, more realistic goals
- Do something everyday that get you closer to that goal
- Adapt the plan as necessary
- Celebrate along the way

| 0:00.0 | This tail strategy brought to you by Petzl. Petzl, the leader in light technology with |
| 0:14.3 | reactive lighting, awesome stuff, Scott. Torch technology. Dang it. Here is the strategy |
| 0:20.6 | and this is a race strategy, not necessarily a training strategy. The race strategy is |
| 0:26.8 | for crossing small rivers and creeks. I'm sure there's people who disagree with me, but |
| 0:35.9 | when you're crossing a small creek and river, don't worry about tiptoeing through that |
| 0:40.6 | creek or river. Just get wet. Just go right through it because eventually you're going |
| 0:46.6 | to get wet. If you're tiptoeing through it, you might as well just go through it. |
| 0:52.8 | People get hurt trying to avoid getting their feet wet. |
| 0:55.9 | These shoes today are built for some water. Who built a trail shoe that doesn't drain? |
| 1:00.5 | One of the things that we, you and me like to categorize when we try new shoes, is how |
| 1:06.5 | fast do they drain? How fast do they dry out? The old foot count, right Scott? How many |
| 1:10.5 | times does a foot hit the ground before it quits squishing around in there? Instead of |
| 1:15.5 | just waiting and looking and trying to tiptoe through that creek, just go ahead and get |
| 1:21.5 | in. Get in and get out. Yeah. Well, that's a good tip. And if you have a, if you have |
| 1:27.2 | a petsal head and lamp on, I mean a trail torch, you'll be able to see that water, navigate |
| 1:32.0 | it properly and get in and out, injury free, and hit the times you want to hit. Go to |
| 1:37.1 | petsal.com and look at all of their head torches that are specifically made for trail running. |
| 1:46.7 | Today, we're going to start a new segment of the podcast called the VAS Course in Review. |
| 1:52.4 | We're going to have various podcasters on talking about various races. They're favorite |
| 1:58.1 | races. They're favorite races. Races that we need to know about. Races we might do. And |
| 2:02.4 | we're going to ask them very rapid fire, quick questions about that course that will |
| 2:07.2 | help us as nation members decide, hmm, maybe I need to buy a plane ticket and go race |
