On December 21, 1987, three men were convicted in a case that saw hate and racism at the forefront.

On December 19, 1986, late in the evening, four black men, 23-year-old Michael Griffith,

36-year-old Cedric Sandofford, and 20-year-olds, Curtis Sylvester and Timothy Grimes,

were traveling from Brooklyn to Queens with plans of picking up Michael's paycheck when their

vehicle suddenly broke down. Stranded now on a deserted stretch of Cross Bay Boulevard, Curtis, the

owner of the 1976 Buick, remained behind while his three

friends set off to walk the three miles north to try and find a payphone, a walk that took

them through the mostly white neighborhood of Howard Beach. Upon entering the area, the three

men were accosted by a group of residents who began yelling

out racial slurs. Screaming that they needed to leave the neighborhood, by 1230 a.m., the men

managed to reach the New Park Pizzeria, where they got a meal and rested for a little bit. Leaving

just 10 minutes later, a much larger group of

young people armed with tire irons, baseball bats, and tree limbs were waiting for them,

and immediately began attacking Michael Griffith and Cedric Sandofford. The mob was being led by

17-year-old John Lester and 16-year-old Jason Lodone.
