Summary

In October 2025, we took over Trevor Hall — a Georgian manor house in Llangollen, Wales — with forty members of the Strong Sense of Place community. It was the best book club ever. We took walks in the countryside, talked about (so many) books, enjoyed ridiculously delicious meals, and told spooky stories by candlelight. And we made lifelong friends. In this episode, we explain where the idea came from in the first place, share some of our favorite moments, talk about our outdoor adventures in North Wales, and offer some tips for how you can create a similar experience with your favorite people. These are questions to be answered.

We are standing in Trevor Hall, this big bonkers 18th century

brick manor on a hill above a little village called Langothlin. And we are late.

1:03.7

Completely my fault. We've planned this thing for a year and a half, but somehow we're 10 minutes late.

1:09.7

There is already a coach outside with a

1:12.5

busload of strong sense of place listeners, and they're getting off with their suitcases and

1:16.5

their books and their raincoats, and we're thinking, oh, this is real now. We're doing this.

1:23.4

These are actual humans. We have, in fact, invited them to live in a Gothic novel with us for the weekend.

1:28.3

This little mini episode is our report back on that experiment. But more than that, it's a story about what it's like to step inside of a bookish weekend with strangers who don't feel like strangers for very long.

1:41.3

We are going to talk about why we did it in the first place, what it was

1:45.7

like to gather in Manchester, England, and then roll into North Wales together, what it felt like

1:51.0

to actually live in a manor house for a few days, the food and the walks and the parlor games and

1:57.0

the quiet moments with books, and what surprised us in good and occasionally exhausting ways.
