Summary

Once, on an imperial tour in some distant province, a woman darted out from the crowd and blocked the path of the Emperor Hadrian, asking for help with some now-forgotten issue. Hadrian tried to put her off. “I haven’t got the time,” he said, attempting to move past her. “Well stop being emperor then!” the woman shouted after him. Hadrian paused, turned back and helped her.

That's the job. Once on an imperial tour in some distant province, a woman darted out from the crowd and blocked the path of the emperor Hadrian, asking for help with some now forgotten issue.

him. Hadrian paused, turned back, and helped her. Each of us can relate to this professionally,

but also as parents. The amount of requests and demands upon us seems endless. Can you make me

something to eat? Can you take me to my friend's house? Can you help me with my

schoolwork? And this is after another day of work where once again we did other people's work, where once again the hard decisions fell on us, or once again we responded to emails and phone calls and inquiries. But guess what? That's the job. We took it. We decided to have kids. We signed up for this. We don't get to say that we don't have the time. We don't get to say that, sorry, the pool is too cold, or sorry, I'm tired and I just got home. No, we must, as we talked about a while back, put our stuff down and play. We've got to go get back in the car. We've got to answer the same question for the one millionth time. We've got to watch the TV show for the one millionth time. Do the dishes for the one millionth time.

One cannot simply stop being emperor. You don't get to stop being a parent. It's the job.

1:55.8

It's the job for life. 24-7, 365. Will that be exhausting? Sure, but it will also be wonderful. After all,

2:05.3

that's why so many people would kill to have either job. In Discipline is Destiny, I talked about the importance of appearance, not for other people, but taking care of yourself as a statement of priorities.

2:29.2

I work from home. I could be unshaven. I could be messy. I could dress however I want, but I get up every morning

2:35.9

and I shave, I get myself together. It's making a statement about who I want to be when I sit down

to do my writing. And that's why I'm talking today about Henson shaving. Henson shaving is a family

owned aerospace parts manufacturer that's made parts for the

International Space Station, the Mars Rover, and now they're bringing precision engineering to your

shaving experience. By using aerospace-grade CNC machines, Henson makes a secure and stable blade

for a vibration-free shave. Henson shaving wants the best razor, not the best razor business.

That means no plastics, no subscriptions, no proprietary blades, and no planned obsolescence.
