Hey there, Shankar here. So often when people reach out to us with stories of gratitude,

they don't know the name of the person who helped them. They sometimes express regret

that they can't thank their hero face to face.

And ever since we launched the show,

it's been our hope that we might help someone make a lost connection

or inspire them to track down their hero.

Today, as we mark Thanksgiving in the United States we thought

we'd bring you one such story an update to one of our early episodes of the show.

In 2021, Jamil Zaki told us about a doctor who helped him during one of the most difficult moments in his life.

So I don't actually know the name of my unsung hero, but I'll remember him for the rest of my life.

When our older daughter Alma was born she was perfect to us but she was also

struggling to live. We learned later that she had had a stroke during her birth.

There was a rotating team of nurses and doctors caring for Alma around the clock.

Early one morning at about 1 a.m.

one of those doctors shared some difficult news about her treatment plan.

And instead of just delivering the news compassionately and leaving, he just pulled up a chair.

It was just me and him. And we talked, I'd say for about 90 minutes or so.

Sharing his story inspired Jamil to find that doctor,

neonatologist Mark Peterson.

And a few months ago, we brought them together over Zoom.
