In March of 2020, a deadly virus swept across the globe.

Donald Trump made an announcement to shut down the economy.

Everywhere, restaurant owners told their employees to stay home, thinking that this would help stop the spread of the virus.

But then something strange happened.

They asked the workers to come back, and then to leave again, and then to come back.

They were living in a sort of dreamland.

They were simultaneously, where simultaneously the novel coronavirus was deadly enough to shut down a unionizing workplace,

but also it was impossible to contract while seated, maskless, at a table.

A group of small business owners called the NYC Hospitality Alliance

argued that contact tracing data showed the virus hadn't been transmitted at restaurants, but rather at indoor gatherings.

Why did I just become Australian?

But no one knows, but no one was asking whether indoor gatherings had happened at restaurants,

which would have rendered the entire argument meaningless.
