Rick Perry was a pilot in the US Air Force in the 1970s

and began his political career in 1985,

representing rural West Texas in the state legislature.

He subsequently served as Texas Commissioner of Agriculture

and was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1998.

In 2000, when George W. Bush became president, Rick Perry succeeded him as governor of Texas.

Texas voters have returned him to the office three times.
