Summary

Mount Sinai is the famous spot where Yahweh gives Moses the ten commandments—and the location where most of Exodus, all of Leviticus, and the first ten chapters of Numbers take place. When Israel first arrives at Sinai, they fail yet another test and try to get Moses to pass it for them. In this episode, join Tim and Jon as they explore Yahweh’s fiery presence, the test at Sinai, and the question of Israel’s national identity: will they be the kingdom of priests Yahweh intends?

0:11.4	In this scroll is the story of ancient Israel being rescued from the oppression of the Egyptians
0:17.0	by God.
0:18.0	And now, they're traveling through the wilderness towards their freedom.
0:23.3	Now this is all leading up to a marriage ceremony of sorts, a covenant that God is going
0:28.4	to enact with Israel out here in the wilderness.
0:32.2	And along the way, God is already teaching them the basics of this covenant.
0:37.4	The covenant relationship at this moment is just listen to what I say.
0:42.0	What I ask you to do, if you just do it, you will become a really unique people among
0:47.8	the nations that represents the character of God.
0:50.9	Today, we arrive at one of the most iconic places in the Bible, a mountain in the wilderness,
0:58.2	Mount Sinai.
0:59.6	The place Moses originally met Yahweh in the flames and the place where Israel is going
1:04.5	to bind themselves together with God in a covenant.
1:08.8	We're going to stay parked at this mountain for the rest of Exodus, all of Leviticus, and
1:13.9	the first ten chapters of Numbers, and all of that material is going to transpire in
1:19.6	what takes up one calendar year.
1:21.8	Now we're going to start with the story of Israel approaching Mount Sinai.
1:26.0	And in this story is a puzzle.
1:27.6	Did God want Israel to go up the mountain or not?
1:31.2	When you read this story, you're going to get the strong impression that Israel was never
1:34.8	meant to go up the mountain.
