| 0:00.0 | It's Tuesday, April 27th, welcome to Marketfoolery, I'm Chris Hill with me today, our man in Colorado, Tim Byers. Thanks for being here. |
| 0:10.0 | Great to be here, Chris. |
| 0:12.0 | We've got two stocks that are hitting all time highs off of their latest earnings reports, but we're going to start with Tesla. |
| 0:19.0 | First quarter results for Tesla, I'd like to think of them as a buffet, Tim, because there was something for everyone. |
| 0:25.0 | If you're a bull, you're pointing to the record quarterly profit and the rising deliveries. If you're a Tesla bear, you're pointing to the increased competition. |
| 0:35.0 | And market share eroding, there's always a lot to get to when we're talking about Tesla. What stood out to you in terms of the quarter itself? |
| 0:46.0 | Let's first give Tesla credit. Here, the automotive revenue was up 75%. That's amazing to $9 billion, so cracking the $9 billion mark, which that's up year over year for $5.1 billion. |
| 1:07.0 | That's an amazing number, and we want to give them some credit on that. Also, the gross margin was up 95 basis points. That's nice. |
| 1:16.0 | And I'll say, what's interesting about this, and we heard Musk say this during the quarter, that this has been one of the most challenging supply chain environments for Tesla, period, period. |
| 1:30.0 | And that makes some sense. We know because of the pandemic, there were some interruptions, particularly in the supply chain for semiconductors for a lot of chip makers. |
| 1:40.0 | And let's be clear, a Tesla is a computer on wheels. It does have a lot of chips. It does suffer from this worldwide semiconductor shortage. |
| 1:53.0 | And the fact that Tesla was able to grow as much as it was, get the benefits that it got in the midst of this supply chain shortage on the gross margin line. |
| 2:06.0 | I think that's really impressive, Chris. So starting from the get-go, I do think Tesla deserves a lot of credit for its automotive business. |
| 2:17.0 | Yet, looking at the stock this morning, I think the market's just giving Tesla a big fat shrug emoji. |
| 2:28.0 | So I'm glad you mentioned the automotive revenue because a lot of the headlines are about, not about, but a lot of the headlines regarding Tesla include the Bitcoin investment until the revenue from that. |
| 2:44.0 | As you said, I mean, give them credit for the automotive revenue. That's their bread and butter. I think, however, you're right, the stock's down, it's not plunging, it's down 4%. |
| 2:55.0 | And when you consider the rise it had over the past year, that's a drop in the bucket. But I think it speaks to a number of things, including the overall environment in terms of competition. |
| 3:11.0 | I mean, it is one of those things where, you know, I'm going to use an analogy here and just, you know, everybody just relax, just let me get through this. |
| 3:22.0 | But when I was reading the coverage this morning and watching CNBC, one of the things that came to mind in thinking about all of the other automotive companies in the world who are now sort of pouring resources into the EV market, |
| 3:39.0 | right? One thought I had was Whole Foods. I thought about Whole Foods being this revolutionary grocery store focused on organics and leading the way and essentially creating this massive category. |
| 3:55.0 | And for a long time when Whole Foods was a standalone public company, if you were a shareholder of that business, you were rewarded in a big way. |
| 4:04.0 | And then over time, even businesses, the likes of which include Walmart got into the organic space. And there was a stretch of time before it was acquired by Amazon that Whole Foods struggled as a standalone business. |
