As of New Year's Day, only 0.35% of the Great Lakes were under ice compared to the 9% on average at this point in the winter.

It's the smallest amount of ice cover in the last 50 years and it's not an anomaly.

Ice levels have been dropping over the past few decades. It's still early in the winter, sorry to remind

everyone. So ice levels could recover, but meteorologists say this is an extreme number that could

have major effects on not only pond hockey but things like ice

fishing competitions. God forbid we lose our ice fishing competition. That's a big deal.
