about his long career as a music and drama critic, about how he got into the creative side of things and about how great art is made.

You know, masterpieces get written for the damnedest reasons.

Very rarely, I suspect, in this world world do people sit down and say I will write my masterpiece

today and if they do what usually comes out is crap.

Here's Debbie Millman.

Terry Teachout has been writing about the arts since 1975 and has been going strong ever

since.

He is the drama critic at the Wall Street Journal, a critic at large for Commentary magazine,

and the author of Sightings, a bi-weekly column for the Friday Journal.

He's also a prolific blogger and that's just the journalism.

Terry has also written four biographies, three opera librettos and a play

called Satchmo at the Waldorf the story of an imagined

evening in the life of Louis Armstrong and recently fueled by a Guggenheim

Fellowship teachout wrote his latest book, also about a jazz great, Duke,

a life of Duke Ellington.
