0:00.0 | Hey friends, what's going on? Welcome to the Astro Hustle. I'm Kory Allen, you are you, and here we are together. |
0:08.0 | So today's podcast, I can't really even begin to tell you how excited and I am about it now meaningful it is to me. |
0:18.0 | It was literally five years in the making and right as I started the podcast ish, I reached out to the guest today who's Terry Riley. |
0:28.0 | And I asked him to come on the show and he did not have the time at that point in time. |
0:35.0 | We stayed in touch and checked back in over the years and along last the time was right and this conversation was able to manifest. |
0:44.0 | For those of you that don't know who Terry Riley is, he is an American composer and performer that was a pioneer in the minimalist school of music |
0:56.0 | along with Philip Glass, Lamont Young and Steve Reich. Terry quite literally invented a whole new form of music and through his experimentation with different effects and composition styles literally changed the face of music worldwide. |
1:16.0 | His influence on music in the effects, no pun intended that he's had, you have definitely heard but have probably not realized that they've come from his own creativity and experimentation. |
1:30.0 | I have since I was very young, but a huge fan of Terry Riley's music, particularly his experimental nature and really the four godfathers of minimalist music in general. |
1:42.0 | I mean, I played a piece of Philip Glass at my father's funeral whenever I was 20. I mean, that's how much I like these guys work. |
1:50.0 | But Terry's work has a really special place, my heart, wild being wildly inventive and unparalleled and its originality. |
2:00.0 | It is also deeply spiritual and connected to the thing, the source is deep within us all and he really puts that on display like no one else in all of his work and he has done that. |
2:12.0 | It's amazing that he's been doing it since the 1960s, which was probably before a lot of your parents were even born and he is still doing it today. |
2:23.0 | In this conversation, I intentionally did not do the kind of album by album piece by piece type of conversation because, you know, Terry is 85 years old and he's been talking about his work for the last probably 45 years in this way. |
2:38.0 | I felt that's a well-worn area. So what we do get into is we begin by talking about his music and then we go into beautiful discussions on creativity and reflecting a lot of his personal experiences over the years. |
2:53.0 | And I get a lot out of this conversation. I have to say that there's a lot of things, particularly on writing music and how to approach music that he talks about that blew my mind that I've been thinking about ever since. |
3:05.0 | Turns out, if you talk to a master, you'll learn a thing or two. But since we didn't really go deep into any of his albums on this, if you aren't familiar with his music, I highly recommend checking out a rainbow and curved air, Sri Kamel, songs for the 10 voices of the two prophets, an untiedled organ, the gift, and in C, of course, as starting places. They're all completely amazing. |
3:31.0 | If you are so inspired, I also recommend checking out some YouTube videos of him playing in the Sri Kamel period. They're really trippy because it shows you how he can be invented tape delay using the time lag accumulator. |
3:45.0 | So make sure and go find and watch that. I've watched those videos over and over and over and they never get old. They're just amazing. |
3:52.0 | It was a great honor of my entire podcasting career to get to speak with Terry for a while and I hope you enjoyed this conversation and his music as much as I have. |
4:05.0 | When it comes to paying off debt, it can feel like an uphill battle. High interest rates resulting in minimum monthly payments keep you in an endless cycle of debt. Upstart can help you get ahead. |
4:17.0 | Upstart is a fast and easy way to pay off your debt with a personal loan all online, whether it's paying off credit cards, consolidating high interest debt or funding personal expenses over half a million people have used upstart to get a simple fixed monthly payment. |
