Hello I'm Kristi Young and this is a download from the Desert Island Discs archive.

This edition may be slightly different from what was actually broadcast,

but it's the only version we have.

It comes from the British Library's radio collection. It was

archived without the music, so although the Castaways choices are introduced,

Terry, I know you have a musical background in your family.

Have you any skill at music yourself?

Just a little, once upon a time I played the cello, or at least I took lessons, and for a long time

was destined to be a cellist.

Fortunately for music, I didn't continue,

but I still love the instrument.

At what age did you give it up?

I think it was about 17.

I played it from 10 until 17 and started the violin at 8 and went on to the

cello at 10 and then I'm afraid gave it up because it was quite clear I wasn't

anywhere near good enough.

Do you play discs a lot?

Yes, music of all kinds I do all the time at the moment I mean of the last five or six years

and when I can't do that I listen to Radio 3. Was it a great
