The term Terra Nullius is Latin for nobody's land.

It's a legal concept that deals with land

that hasn't been claimed by any country.

It's derived from the legal concept of Res Nullius,

which means nobody's thing.

Res Nullius pertains to property that's been abandoned or that no one owns.

For example, a couch that someone's put out on the curb

might fall under the theory of Res Nollius because they've abandoned it.

The extension of Res Nulius to land was a European innovation that occurred during the age of exploration.

And it was a pretty handy concept as you were sailing around the world and came to a new land.
