His mother, Rebecca Cornell, was dead, her body charred terribly in a tragic house fire.

It was initially ruled an accident by a coroner's jury in Portsmouth, Rhode Island,

but then after Thomas's uncle was visited by Rebecca's ghost,

he sounded the alarm about her death.

Her body was re-examined in a new coroner's jury. the burned flesh around it. The matrons who dressed the corpse for burial hadn't

noticed it before. Thomas and his mother did seem to have a strained relationship.

She couldn't stand his wife Sarah and she was depressed.

Rebecca might have also been in poor health.

But on February 16th, that second coroner's jury ruled that Rebecca's death was a suspicious one.

And a surprise witness would soon solidify the colony of Rhode Island's case against Thomas Cornell.

Thomas first faced a murder indictment and he would then go to trial.
