One evening in the late 1970s, several months before they were recruited to join the inaugural Chicano Squad,

Cecil Mosqueda and his partner Bobby Gatewood were on patrol.

Cecil had already been a police officer for at least four years, while Bobby was fresh off probation.

Bobby was a good officer, very positive by himself, sure of himself, strong.

He was the kind of guy that you wanted as an officer.

They hear a call come over the radio for a burglarier alarm at a church.

The two are looking for something to do, so they sign themselves onto the call and speed to the scene.

It's probably a false alarm, but as police officers, they have to treat it seriously.

Cecil checks the perimeter of the church, looking at each window and door, and around every corner,

and doesn't see anything suspicious.

Bobby inspects the inside of the building, and everything seems fine.

Cecil is ready to clear the scene and get back on patrol, so he heads into the church to find his partner.

Inside, Bobby is talking to a nun.

He says, I don't believe in no God, you are who you are.

You make your own bed. You are who you are, there's no God. He's telling this to the nun.

Cecil, a devout Catholic, was horrified, as was the nun.

And I turn around and see how you fool.

I told him, Bobby, where are you telling her that? What is wrong with you?

And he's just, I'm telling the way I feel, Cecil, you're over, you are.

You make whatever you want because you're your own person.

I said, but you don't see that, Bobby. Not to her.
