Welcome to a special edition of the Capitals Talk podcast.

I'm Rob Carlin, along with Ryan Billy,

had an idea a couple of weeks ago that maybe we should talk to Ted Leonis since they're closing in on the first ever defense of a Stanley Cup title.

And he was gracious enough to sit down with me for a one-on-one interview. I don't know, 15 or 20 minutes or so. Yeah, about that. And it was interesting, a couple of things, and we'll get to the interview in just a second. But I thought for sure, my first question you'll hear, when I said, how has your life changed since being a Stanley Cup champion? And he was like, not really. And I get that he's led a pretty good life I mean let's not like fool ourselves he's he's been an incredibly lucky man um well he worked hard I'm not

I'm not saying yeah but I mean has lived a very you know lucky lucky life and um and uh but you know

he was like no like you know I feel like it was part of his bigger plan

all along was the sense i got from him was like i've been waiting and working for this for a long

time that's definitely the sense that i got that that was uh that was something he had wished i think

or it had hoped that it happened earlier. And so the fact

that it's a goal that he achieved and it's a goal that he attained. But I mean, I think

having seen him operate now in the city for as long as he's been here, this is a guy, he's a man

with the plan. Like this guy's got goals and they're lofty goals. And this is a big part of it for

sure. But there's a line that he said during that interview that I loved. It was, you know, the paranoid survive. Look for, you know, he's always looking forward, looking to see what he can do better. And, yeah, the Stanley Cup was a great thing for him. But I don't know. For me, I would have gone to Tahiti and called it a day. Like that was a day. Like, okay. I've done everything I need to do. No, he's still driven. And this was done the day after they went to the White House. And you'll hear him reference that he told the guys, okay, that was the official end. There is no more celebration.
