Summary

Twitter today is alight with conversations about a New York Post story about Hunter Biden. But you can't find a link to the story on Twitter, and you'll be temporarily blocked if you try to share it — due to concerns that the story is based on hacked, or possibly manipulated documents. Facebook also has put sharing limits on the story. Dan is joined by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to discuss Big Tech censorship, election disinformation, and why he plans to subpoena Jack Dorsey but not Mark Zuckerberg. Plus, Lucy Dadayan of the Urban Institute joins to discuss her new report on state tax revenue in 2020 compared to 2019.

Hi, I'm Dan Pramack, and welcome to Axios Recap. Today is Thursday, October 15th.

Stocks are down. COVID hospitalizations in Missouri and Wisconsin are up to record highs,

If you've been on Twitter or Facebook today,

0:22.6

blocked. On Facebook, you could have posted about it, but the reach of that post was limited.

0:44.7

Why? Well, mostly because the New York Post story is based on emails allegedly obtained and

hack. Moreover, there is some evidence that at least one or more of the alleged emails

1:01.6

may have been manipulated based on timestamp and other metadata. Four things to know. First,

1:07.7

this is the first time that these platforms have ever blocked distribution

1:12.3

of a story by a major media outlet, which the New York Post most certainly is. Two, both platforms

1:18.6

do have pre-existing policies against distributing hacked materials, although it has been

1:24.0

selectively enforced. Three, we here at Axios, we don't know if the post story or its source documents are

1:30.2

legitimate.

1:31.1

I wish we did, but we don't.

1:33.3

Fourth, a lot of Republicans are livid, arguing that Facebook and Twitter are putting

1:37.8

their thumbs on the scales of an election that is just weeks away, basically arguing

1:42.7

censorship.
