Summary

: CNBC's Carl Quintanilla sits down with Nikki Toscano, showrunner and executive producer of "The Offer” on Paramount+, to dive into how the limited series showcases Oscar-winning producer Albert S. Ruddy's never-before-seen experiences making “The Godfather.” They discuss how the show’s producers cast fresh faces to play cinema icons Al Pacino and Marlon Brando, competing in a flooded streaming environment contending with bidding wars, and words of advice for young up-and-coming showrunners entering the industry. So, Nikki, thanks for being with us.

0:01.4

Thank you for having me.

0:02.0

It's great to have you.

Just talk about the show to start with, how the idea began, and what it is about the production

0:09.7

of this particular movie that fascinates us half a century later.

0:15.0

Well, I mean, it's the Godfather, you know?

0:17.3

It's arguably the greatest film of all time.

0:19.8

And I think when Al Reddy, who was the

0:23.9

producer, the sole producer, the last time there was a sole producer of a film that won an

0:28.8

Academy Award, came in to speak with Nicole Clemens at Paramount TV Studios and talked to her

0:35.2

about his story. I think that she immediately recognized

0:38.3

that there was a unique tale in there. The story of this guy that was this like outsider underdog

was not, you know, on the inside of Hollywood, who sold a TV show, had a couple credits under

0:50.3

his belt, and then was handed, you know, was handed the godfather.

0:58.4

And I think what's the most interesting part of his story is that Al Reddy was like not only having to contend with, you know, battling the studio system to get this film made,

but battling the real-life mafia as well.

1:06.3

And there's just sort of life and death stakes that are sort of just inherently built into telling that kind of tale.

1:12.4

Right.

1:12.7

Had there been enough history written about it yet, or are we going to uncover new things about what went into the making in the movie?

1:19.9

There's, I mean, there's a lot of, there's a lot of information out there.

1:24.0

The unique part of, I think, the offer is that it's told from Al Reddy's point of view, and there's not a lot out there from his point of view. There's a ton, you know, I mean, obviously, like, you know, there's a ton from Francis Ford Coppola's perspective, and there's Robert Evans, and the kid stays in the picture, and Peter Bard and all of these other iconic, you know, Hollywood figures. But Al had, Al's story was like largely, you know, untapped.

And Michael Tolkien, who is also on this show sat down with him and interviewed him over
