Summary

CNBC’s Carl Quintanilla sits down with ‘The Last of Us' Craig Mazin – the showrunner, co-creator, executive producer, writer, and director behind the HBO hit-series. The two discuss the challenges of adapting a beloved video game into a primetime TV show and how Mazin's experience building HBO's Emmy-award winning ‘Chernobyl’ and passion for the game itself sparked a partnership with co-creator Neil Druckmann. They also discuss preparing the star-studded cast for their roles, developing content to appeal to both an existing fan base of gamers and new audiences alike, and why Mazin says he never creates for virality. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

It's already as we know one of the best pilots HBO's ever had. I guess I'm

0:19.2

wondering how you're absorbing all of that and how much you sort of suspected this reaction would be in

place given sort of the built-in audience of that source material? Well certainly

0:30.1

the built-in audience for the source material was encouraging and everybody wants that sort of head start but I think anybody that expects this level of success is a little off kilter.

0:42.4

I mean I'm not I I always brace for the worst. All

0:47.7

I really want is for people to watch it and enjoy it but the response from critics and from the audience has been overwhelming so far.

0:55.5

It's just been great and I honestly feel like we haven't even shown people the best of what we have yet.

1:01.5

Yeah, we can't wait. Let's talk a bit about that in a second.

1:04.0

I am curious though going back to the origin of how you came to know the initial product and then of course

1:11.2

Neil Druckman and your interest in that and how you wrestled with

1:16.0

sort of games as source material people argue it's had a spotty record in the past.

1:23.6

Was there a feeling that this was a challenge to show them how it's done, so to speak?

1:28.0

Well, that's a really interesting question.

1:30.0

I never thought of it as a challenge because I had the last of us. It's a game that I played

1:36.8

when it came out in 2013 and you know I played it many times since on the PlayStation 3, 4, and now 5.

1:45.1

And I was also working with Neil Druckman.

1:46.9

So I had this incredible head start.

1:50.3

The fact that the Last of Us has such a strong narrative with such an incredible relationship at the heart of it made it very adaptable to me.
