Summary

CNBC's Carl Quintanilla sits down with Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, co-creators and executive producers of HBO’s finance drama "Industry.” The collaborators and best friends discuss how their experiences as former bankers inspired the hit series and why it was important to showcase the perspectives of younger professionals in the business. They also dive into how they balanced authenticity and creativity across the show’s plot lines, the process of demystifying financial jargon for a mainstream audience, and why Industry’s storytelling is largely driven by strong female roles. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Thanks so much.

0:25.6

Great to hear.

There's a bit of an obsession with the show among our audience and certainly our staff,

0:33.6

mostly because it's born in real experiences that you guys had on in finance.

0:39.3

And the way you sort of parlayed that into this project, I know you've told this story before,

0:44.3

but can you talk about the moment where this was suggested that you turned this into a show?

0:51.3

Yeah, sure. I mean, so me and Conrad, obviously you mentioned that we had we had pretty

0:56.0

careers in finance. And mine was in Conrad's and we left banking and I started trying to make

1:06.0

it in, you know, TV writing and Conrad was still in the bank that he worked in and we wrote a sort of, I say

1:11.9

a sort of, you know, a prototype version of this show and it wasn't very good at all. It's mostly

1:16.8

just characters called Mickey and Conrad talking about how much they hated finance. And it was a

1:21.8

pretty derivative version of better banking shows and better banking art. And then we split in a draw,

1:28.4

forgot about it. And then we were doing another with Jane Tranter who runs Bad Wolf, who's the production

1:33.2

company that makes industry and she found out we were two former bankers and she said,

1:37.0

have you ever thought about writing a show in this space? And we said yes, we had and it was

1:41.4

absolutely terrible. But she said, have you thought about it from the perspective of the youngest people, the people

1:47.0

like you who were going into it for the first time?
