Here's your closing bell brief for Wednesday, September 24th. I'm Catherine Sullivan for the

Wall Street Journal. U.S. stocks slipped as the tech sector pulled back for a second straight day.

Concerns about the high cost of artificial intelligence weighed on the market, with the Dow Jones

industrial average falling nearly 0.4%. The NASDAQ and the S&P 500 were both down about 0.3%. Elsewhere, oil

futures extended their gains and the U.S. dollar strengthened. Among other individual companies,

shares of Alibaba jumped 9% after the Chinese tech giant boosted its spending pledge for

artificial intelligence and released a new AI model.

The news also lifted other Chinese tech stocks that traded New York, including Baidu, which was up nearly 6%.

Stock in Lithium Americas nearly doubled amid talks with the U.S. government over a loan for a mine project in Nevada and a potential government stake in the company.

Shares of General Motors, a partner in the lithium project, added 2%.

And European defense stocks, including Saab and Rhinemital, rallied after President Trump committed to providing more weapons to NATO allies.
