Summary

With one round down, opinions are still split on F1's new rules and the way they've altered the on-track spectacle. On this episode of The Race F1 Tech Show, Edd Straw and former F1 technical director Gary Anderson discuss the positives and negatives of what we saw in Australia, discuss how the teams' growing tech understanding will impact racing, and debate the tweaks F1 can make to the rules to improve what many see at the immediate problem areas.

Gary also answers questions from listeners on battery technology, front-axle harvesting, and power unit component allocation.

Welcome to the race F1 tech show, and we couldn't have chosen a better time to record this episode,

0:34.4

because of course we've just had the first race of F1's new regulations era.

0:40.7

So that's produced a huge amount to talk about I'm Ed Straw and of course the star of the show

0:44.7

is Gary Anderson, our resident XF1, technical director. Now we're going to talk about what we saw

0:52.4

of the racing from a technical perspective and then in part two we'll get onto what could or may need to or may not need to change. But just for a quick question, just to start, Gary, what's your just overall impression of what we saw in Australia from a technical perspective?

1:09.6

Well, I have to say that it's the first year for quite a while

1:12.7

that I actually got up to watch all the sessions live. And that's really because it was a new season

1:17.3

starting, I suppose. But it brought everything that I think we thought it would bring. It was

1:24.1

entertaining. I think what I was impressed with was the teams come into terms with it fairly quickly.

1:30.8

You know, obviously there was teams that were battling, getting the best out of the package on day one.

1:36.4

But by day two, it was mainly sorted.

1:39.2

And I thought, you know, at the end of the day, we had an entertaining race weekend.

1:45.0

And I emphasise the word entertaining, I suppose, is being important there,

1:49.0

because there's lots of things that I would change or not like, or didn't like, but it was entertaining.

1:56.0

So for the 90% probably casual view that we have, it suited them, I would say, because

2:03.5

it was exceptional, to be honest. But then, as I always look at it, so as the bake-off finals,

2:11.0

it can be entertaining. So what is it you want? Is it a sport or is it entertainment? That's the

2:16.9

big question, I suppose.

2:18.3

There's been so much said over the past few weeks about the entertainment of Formula One and the new

2:23.7

regs, but nobody has ever compared it to Bake Off, the Bake Off final in particular. So you've at least
