In June, Doug attended Velo-city, an annual cycling summit hosted by the European Cyclists' Federation that brings the bike world together. This year's conference was held in the Belgian city of Ghent. While there, Doug wandered the exhibition floor talking with people from all over the world β€” including elected officials, city planners, advocates, industry representatives, academics and bike-curious regular citizens β€” about why it was important for them to attend Velo-city and what lessons and knowledge they hoped to take home. As you'll hear in this bonus episode, the fight to make cities safer, more sustainable and more equitable truly is a global effort.

Thanks to the European Cyclists' Federation for having The War on Cars at Velo-City and to Ali Lemer for editing this episode.

Kjoda, I'm Pippa Coombe from Auckland, Atero, New Zealand. I've been on Auckland Council

0:11.1

for 12 years and so this is a good break to have to see

0:15.5

what's happening around the world with cycling and mobility. What are the

And that's what we're hearing a lot.

0:36.7

I mean, even here in Ghent, there's been a big fight over car parks and space for bikes. We've got kind of facets of that happening back home as well.

0:46.7

A lot of anger towards low traffic neighborhoods, removing car parks, slower speeds.

0:54.0

How do you diffuse some of that anger?

0:57.0

Well, I think this is just one of the really big questions,

1:00.0

and I haven't got the perfect answer for it at all and again thinking about the comments from the deputy mayor of Ghent

1:06.7

He was saying you can't take examples from overseas and take them to your own home and say that's what we should do.

1:13.5

People have got to experience it on the ground.

1:16.5

And I'm seeing that in Wellington.

1:19.3

I was at a conference there and they have actually managed to do a pilot bike network and it's been

1:25.4

really successful and that has allowed people to experience and feel what

1:31.0

it's like to live in a cycleable city and so now they can move to

1:35.0

and unfortunately we miss that step in Auckland and so I think that's one of the

1:41.0

sort of takeaways from the conference is about we really just
