Summary

“The most tragic episode in the history of the Church,” according to the Mormon Church’s own website, is the Mountain Meadows Massacre. In this episode, we talk about the violence carried out by early Mormons at Mountain Meadows, what was deliberately covered up, and how to reckon with that history now—especially after leaving the church. We dig into the social and political tensions between Mormons in the Utah Territory and the federal government, the complex relationships with the Paiute people, and the fact that Mormon headquarters still isn’t fully addressing the elephant in the room. We have a doozy of a subject matter to tackle today.

I have been down a rabbit hole yet again.

We are talking about the Mountain Meadows Massacre. The first time I ever heard about

0:23.5

the Mountain Meadows Massacre, it was right before I left on my mission, and I must have

0:30.3

heard somewhere something about this massacre, and I had never heard of it before. So I googled it.

search, clicking on one article, and within a few sentences of reading it, I felt a bad feeling,

0:46.3

which in retrospect, I now think was just, why did I not know this? This feels really crazy and

significant to my faith. But at the time,

I thought, oh, this is a bad feeling trying to tell me that this is anti-Mormon in heavy

And I tried not to think about it again until leaving the church

1:13.0

in my deconstruction of Mormonism. I knew broad strokes what the Mountain Meadows Massacre was,

1:19.4

but very broad strokes. And it wasn't until reading this book, none left to tell, and then doing

1:26.0

a deep dive in tandem tandem that I really internalized

1:31.0

what this event was, how horrific it was, incredibly horrific, and also all of the Mormon factors

1:40.1

that were at play. I knew that Mormons were the one who perpetrated the violence, but I didn't know

1:45.6

really the context at all. And learning about it was just so devastating. And I think a really

1:52.7

important example of what can happen when there is blind obedience to leaders of a religion,

2:04.5

blind obedience to a certain religious god.
