So today I am joined by good friend of the panel and returning guest, Dan Berger.

Dan is a professor of comparative ethnic studies at the University of Washington at

Bothel, and author of Stayed on Freedom, the long history of black power through one family's

journey. So I've asked Dan on today to talk about a piece that he wrote about how RICO charges,

like the ones recently levied against Stop Cop City, have a long history of being used against

left-wing movements and radicals. The piece is called RICO and

Stop Cop City, the Long War Against the Left, and it was published in partnership by the Law and

Political Economy blog and The Abusable Past, which is the digital companion to the Radical History

It's always great to be here.

So we were talking about this a little bit before we started.

And Dan, I'm just so glad that you could join to talk about this piece you wrote, which

will get us into some of the history of how the criminal legal system punishes left movements. This is part of a much

longer, sort of broader history of the criminalization of left organizing, of mutual aid,

of protest movements, but of just simply, you know, groups of people sharing the same sort of

leftist ideas at the same time.

And as you joked to me, when I texted you about coming on, you replied with something like,

I like that I'm death panel's repression correspondent.

Because really, you know, at the heart of what we're going to talk about today is, you know,

repression and the ways that the state criminalizes
