I wanted to at least try to describe as specifically as I could what was weird and distinctive and

ultimately I think wrong about the intellectual milieu that I grew up in. My dad would make

me read or listen to these different fundamentalist explainers about how rock music was satanic and

it was was bad for me. I have been trying to figure out where it all comes from and I think it's

the confluence of a couple of different courses so it's partly cold war paranoia. I mean we know that

there's like that famous pamphlet about how the Beatles are a communist plot to hypnotize youth

so I think it's it's a little bit that which I mean psychologically what's going on there I mean

probably fear of the new historically new-ish power of mass cultures part of it and then it's

more than a little bit racism fear of black people fear of integration fear of miscegenation and

then I think it's a it's a specifically 60s fascination with and fear of the occult that becomes

a kind of fascination with and a kind of unconscious mirroring. I mean one of the things that

really strikes me is that if you study the fundamentalist anti-rock literature you actually

run into examples of people inventing readings of texts that are not there like practicing very

open isegesis in a way that reminds me of really something out of like a horror novel. The engraving

that we found in the old cave looks like it says this harmless thing but it used to have an

extra syllable that made it a scary invocation like these guys would analyze Bob Dylan lyrics

in that way
