Summary

I consumed a lot of Mormon and Mormon-adjacent media this week: Heather Gay’s Surviving Mormonism, Elizabeth Smart’s new documentary Kidnapped and Jennette McCurdy’s latest novel Half His Age. As you can imagine, I’ve got thoughts! We get into purity culture and sex, what it means to face the very worst of Mormonism, and where the bounds of “religious freedom” really are. And I also end up sharing a heavy family conversation I had this week about immigration enforcement and just how intense everything feels right now. Hello everyone and welcome to the Girls Camp podcast Patreon Girls Camp Unplugged. It is me,

0:06.2

your host, Haley Rawl, and we have a lot to talk about. I randomly, not even intentionally,

0:14.0

but I have consumed a lot of Mormon or Mormon adjacent media this week that I have been

0:20.2

taking notes on because it is bringing up a lot of things

0:23.6

for me. I have a lot of thoughts and opinions on these things that I want to share with you.

0:27.8

The first one being Heather Gay's surviving Mormonism docu series. It is a three-part docu-series.

It actually came out, I think, a couple months ago maybe, and I've just been dragging my feet

0:40.9

on watching it.

0:42.2

And I think that's because it is a very heavy subject matter.

0:46.1

I could tell from the name and from the trailer.

0:48.8

And I finally watched that.

0:50.7

I actually finished that today.

0:53.2

Wow.

0:57.8

Very heavy, very impactful. Lots of thoughts on that. I actually finished that today. Wow. Very heavy, very impactful. Lots of thoughts on that.

I also watched the new Elizabeth Smart documentary called Kidnapped. It's on Netflix and really revisited the whole Elizabeth Smart story. Elizabeth Smart was Mormon at the time of her kidnapping. Her family

1:12.0

was Mormon from Utah. And I think there's a lot of Mormon stuff in her story, Mormon connections.

1:19.0

I also listened to Jeanette McCurdy on Call Her Daddy. She went on the Call Her Daddy podcast

1:24.4

to promote her new novel called Half His Age, which is somewhat

1:29.0

autobiographical. It's not autobiographical, but it's based on an experience she had with a

1:34.9

significant age gap relationship. After listening to her on that episode, which she also talked

1:40.4

about some Mormon stuff that I found really interesting, actually started the book,

1:44.2

Half His Age. And I'm about three quarters of the way through. It's not super Mormon specific,
