Thank you. Jesus's earliest and closest followers were known as the 12 apostles.

In future podcasts, I will discuss the importance of the apostles and the apostolic tradition and succession. But here's a really brief overview. There

are many biblical reasons for the number 12. There's all sorts of connections to the Old

Testament and ancient traditions. The 12 original apostles were

Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew James, son of Alpheus, Simon

the zealot, Judas, son of Jonas, and last, but certainly not least, by a long shot, Judas Ascariot.

There is a lot of Jameses, and we'll get into them too in a later episode.

Once Judas Ascariot had his eventual falling out, another person was elected by the other apostles to join.

All of these apostles or early disciples of Jesus had their own stories

and spread the message of Jesus to the farthest reaches of the Roman Empire and far, far beyond.
